Smoke Odor Removal in Greater Indianapolis

A list of reasons why you should choose Midwest Remediation for your water damage services?

Smoke is often the longest of all lingering household odors. The scent of cigarettes or the smoke that follows you around after a terrible fire can stick to fabrics, carpeting, and walls leaving a thin film and the odor that just doesn’t go away. Smoke odors are stubborn and complete removal is quite time-consuming, but with its removal, you can eradicate a health hazard and create a more enjoyable living space.

Use Vinegar on Fabrics

The people who come home from smoky bars are new faced with the problem of having the smell stuck to their clothes and hair, and no matter how tired they are, they need to take a shower or else live with the scent of smoke stuck to their clothes and bedding. The same process applies to the fabrics in your home, which is clung to tightly by any lingering smoke. Make sure that you remove any fabric items that you can from the room, including pillows, blankets, curtains and bedding. If you own a washing machine, throw all of the fabric items into a cold wash cycle and add 2 cups of vinegar.

An important thing to note is that you shouldn’t use high heat to dry these items. The heat revives the smoky smell and it proceeds to choke the life out of your fabric. It’s better to use a low heat or fluff cycle, and then you can hang them up on the clothesline to dry in the sun. Those techniques applied together will be even more effective in removing smoke odor.

For the walls, the best thing you can do is apply a water and vinegar mixture. Create a 75% vinegar and 25% water mixture, and use this to fill up half of your bucket. If at this point the smell is too strong for you, add a little more water until it’s more tolerable to work with.

The rags that are dipped into this mixture are going to get really dirty, so it’s best to use a pea-sized amount of cleaning solution and change it often so that the mixture remains clean.

Dip and Squeeze

Dip a rag or towel one at a time into the mixture and squeeze it firmly to remove most—but not all—of the liquid. Starting from a top corner of the wall, wipe down 3-foot-by-3-foot sections of the wall, rinse the rag, and go onto the next section.

When that certain part of wall is completed, repeat the process around all the walls of the room until every wall has been cleaned. If the ceiling is flat, repeat this process across the ceiling, too.

if you really can't get the smoke out of the carpet, just rip and replace

Rip and Replace

If you’re still struggling, one final step for removing smoke odor from a home is to just repaint the entire room and replace every single bit of flooring—though this is an extreme solution. If all the parts of the home you’ve been trying to clean are still strong with smoke residue, you can cover the walls and ceiling at least, by utilizing a stain and odor-blocking primer.

If the smoke damage has been over a long period of time, the carpet and the pad may be on its last legs. You can try hiring professional carpet cleaners to try and salvage it, but if you’re moving into a home that already has severe smoke odors stuck in the carpet and padding, it’s best to just rip it out and replace it with a new one. It’s part of the worst-case scenario, but you may find that it’s suddenly become more possible to remove or cover up the odor.
